EGO MAG: THE 90’s GRUNGE EDITION is the perfect catalogue for all the punky, in-your-face, too-cool-for-school misfits of the 1990’s looking to relive their glory days. I was born in 1999, at the tail end of this wonderful decade, so, naturally, I had to spend a considerable amount of time researching and gathering inspiration for my design choices. I wanted to make something that captured all the grittiness and edge of the grunge movement.

This specific installment of EGO MAG is completely geared around the grunge music movement and the feature spreads detail the rise to fame of two notable musical groups: Pixies and Nirvana (you can imagine how excited my parents were to hear about this project).

I wanted to go go crazy, go maximalist — I thought patterns, lines, high impact color choices and punchy, expressive typography. So, I got to work creating some linework and patterns that I thought fit the bill. On the cover, I ran the masthead up the left side of the page and birthed a plethora of graphic imagery on the right. I chose a black and white color scheme with red and yellow for accent and PUNCH! For the table of contents and internal spreads, I let the type, photography, and collage do most of the talking. The end result was every bit as angsty and energetic as I had envisioned. Long live the 90’s!
