MINIMALISM x CHARLI XCX

INSTRUCTOR: Paul Sheriff
INSTITUTION: Tyler School of Art & Architecture, 2021

The goal of this project was to design a catalog for a musical legend in the minimalist design style. Having never actually designed anything minimal, I was already biting my nails. However, after an hour or two of intense Google-ing, I was bright-eyed and bushy-tailed and ready for the challenge.

For my first go at creating a catalog, it seemed only natural to create one completely dedicated to one of my favorite musical artists of all time — the legendary queen of hyperpop — Charli XCX. But, of course, that pesky minimalist design style. Now, if you know anything about Charli XCX, the woman is anything but minimal. It took some time but I was eventually able to circumvent this clash by instituting a system of stylistic & structural rules to guide my design choices. The whole process involved a lot of “taking away” – going over each spread time and time again to remove unnecessary or excessive elements that didn’t fit the rules. As a self-proclaimed “maximalist,” this part was painful at times but the final result is just as trim, sleek, and streamlined as I hoped it would be and I think Charli would be proud.
